Reverse osmosis (RO) is a membrane separation process driven by a pressure gradient. It effectively removes dissolved salt colloids and organic matters in water, acting as a molecular filter. The process is the reverse of natural osmosis. By using a water pump to exert pressure on a saline solution, water is forced through the semipermeable membrane. To maintain efficiency, concentrated water continuously washes the membrane surface, removing impurities and ensuring high-quality desalination and purification.
